Researchers mobilize to save hurricane-ravaged Monkey Island

October 20, 2017

Cayo Santiago, a 94-acre island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, has been home to approximately 1500 free-roaming rhesus monkeys since 1938, making it the longest running primate field site in the world. It has also been a key location for Laurie Santos’ research for over 23 years.

Sadly, the Sept. 20th hurricane which devastated much of the infrastructure on Puerto Rico had a direct hit on Cayo Santiago, destroying all of its infrastructure and much of the island’s vegetation.
